What Are Xtras?

Macromedia Xtras are "plug-in" code modules that let users add specialized capabilities and extended functionality to Macromedia products. When placed in an application's Xtras folder, Xtras integrate their commands, palettes, and functionality into the application. In addition, Xtras provided by Macromedia allow you to use other third party "plug-in" types and filters in Macromedia applications.

Xtras are based on the Macromedia Open Architecture (MOA), which provides a common extension mechanism for Macromedia and third-party developers to enhance the capabilities of Macromedia products. Because Macromedia incorporates MOA into many of its applications, developers will find it easy to develop Xtras that work not only cross-platform (Windows and MacOS) but across multiple Macromedia products.

The FreeHand Xtra Development Kit
The FreeHand XDK provides you with the documentation, source code, and project files required to build FreeHand Xtras. Your Xtras can incorporate a variety of components:
  • Items under the Xtras menu.
  • Interactive buttons in the Xtra Tools panel.
  • Buttons in the Operations panel.
  • Import and export filters.
  • Floating, zippable panels.
The XDK allows you to tap into the powerful functionality that has made FreeHand the best graphics application on the market! New features in the FreeHand XDK include access to the new Countour fills, Brushes, and IPTC file data!
